A dog is one of the more forgiving things to color. Coats come in nearly every shade a pencil box holds – cream, gold, rust, chocolate, gray, black – and nobody can tell you a patch is in the wrong place, because on a real dog it could be anywhere. These dog coloring pages cover both ends of the family: round-eyed puppies in simple storybook scenes, and grown dogs of well-known breeds, drawn with the coat, ears and build that make each breed recognizable. Every dog here is an original Papaya Ink drawing.

The pages come in two formats. Black-and-white sheets are plain line art for anyone who wants to choose every color alone. Sheets with a color sample carry a finished picture on the top half and the same drawing in outline below, with a dashed line between them for cutting – useful when the goal is a true-to-breed coat, or when a younger artist wants something to copy. The Show me buttons above the pictures switch between all pages, black-and-white only, and pages with a color sample. Click any picture and its PDF opens in a new tab, ready to print; the files are sized for US Letter and fit A4 as well. On a black-and-white printer the color sample comes out gray, so a color printer does those sheets more justice.

A few things help with fur. Work in short strokes that follow the direction the coat grows instead of filling it flat. Build a dark coat from layers – brown or deep blue under the black – and leave thin slivers of paper bare, or the dog turns into a silhouette. A white dog is mostly shadow: pale gray, blue or lavender in the folds, and nothing at all on the rest. Whatever the breed, keep the small highlight in each eye and on the nose uncolored. Those dots are what make the dog look alive.
