Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute, and in drawing it means a very specific recipe: a head nearly as big as the body, wide glossy eyes, a tiny smile and a soft blush on each cheek. These kawaii mermaid coloring pages take that recipe under the sea. Every mermaid here is an original Papaya Ink character – nobody is borrowed from a film or a show – and each one shares the page with a friend: mostly sea animals, plus the occasional visitor from dry land who clearly took a wrong turn somewhere.
Two formats share this page. Black and white sheets are full-page line art with nothing decided for you. Color sample sheets put the finished picture in full color on the top half and repeat the same drawing as clean line art underneath, with a dashed line between the two – match the palette shade for shade, or treat it as one opinion and choose your own. The Show me buttons above the pictures switch between all pages, black and white only, or pages with a color sample. Click any picture and the PDF opens – it is sized for US Letter and fits A4 as well. On a black and white printer the color sample comes out gray, while the outlines stay crisp.
Kawaii art is forgiving, which is why adults color it to switch off and kids finish it without frustration: the shapes are round and the outlines bold, so markers stay inside the lines. A few small habits give the style its look. Keep the palette pastel and limited – a handful of candy colors repeated across the page reads better than every pencil in the box. Leave the white highlights in the eyes untouched; they are what makes a chibi face look alive. Add the blush last, with a light circular motion in pink or peach just under each eye. The busier sheets, with coral gardens and layered petals behind the characters, reward sharp pencils or fine-tip pens.

Fun Things to Make with These Coloring Pages
- Sticker sheet – in the print dialog choose several pages per sheet to shrink the pictures, color the small versions, cut around each character with a thin white border and back them with double-sided tape.
- Shrink-film charms – trace the line art onto shrink plastic with a permanent marker, color it with pencils, punch a hole and bake as the film package says. The mermaid comes out thick, glossy and keychain-sized.
- Cupcake toppers – cut the color samples into circles, glue them back to back over a toothpick and stand them in frosting for an under-the-sea birthday table.
- White gel pen finish – once the coloring is done, add tiny white dots and stars to the eyes, the bubbles and the edge of every scale. It is the fastest way to make a kawaii page look polished.
- Notebook cover – trim a finished page to size, glue it to the front of a plain notebook and seal it with wide clear tape so it survives a school bag.
- Tracing-paper suncatcher – trace the outline onto tracing paper or vellum, color it with markers and tape it to a sunny window; the light comes through like stained glass.
- Matching game – cut along the dashed lines, set the color samples aside, and after the line art is colored shuffle both piles and pair each picture with its sample.
- Pastel challenge – pick only a handful of pencils before you start and finish the whole page with them. Limits like this are how the kawaii look is built.
