Kawaii is the Japanese word for cute, and cats have long been one of its favorite subjects. These kawaii cat coloring pages follow the classic recipe: a round head a little too big for the body, huge glossy eyes full of sparkles and tiny hearts, a button nose, a happy open mouth and fur so fluffy you can almost feel it under your pencil. Many of the kittens wear a bow on an ear or a bow tie at the collar, and they spend their days the way real cats do – batting at toys, chasing anything that moves, curling up in cozy corners and peeking out of their favorite hiding spots.
The coat is the best part to color, and there is no wrong answer. Go classic with an orange tabby, a silver gray or a black-and-white tuxedo, mix a calico of ginger, black and cream patches, or leave realism behind for lavender, mint and peach. The fur is drawn with short, feathery strokes around the cheeks, chest and tail, so layer colored pencils in the direction of the fur, keep the lightest shade on the chest and the deepest along the back, and let the stripes and patch markings carry a darker tone. Small touches make the kawaii look come alive: leave the white highlights in the eyes untouched, and add a blush of pink to the inner ears, the cheeks and the toe beans.
Around the cats you'll find cozy rooms and sunny gardens – lace curtains, patterned rugs, trailing houseplants, plump cushions and flowers in bloom. Bold main outlines keep the characters easy and relaxing to fill, while the backgrounds give you as much detail as you want: stop at the kitten for a quick, cheerful page, or build the whole scene with soft shading, patterned fabrics and warm light from the window. Colored pencils, gel pens, alcohol markers and watercolor all work well.
The pages come in both classic black-and-white and color sample versions. The black-and-white sheets give you the whole picture to color any way you like. Color sample sheets show a bright finished version on top and the same outline below – a ready-made palette to follow, or a starting point to reimagine the coats, toys and gardens in colors of your own. Use the "Show me" buttons above the gallery to see every page, just the black-and-white sheets, or just the ones with a color sample. The color samples print best in color; on a black-and-white printer they come out in shades of gray, while the outline below still prints crisp and clean.
These cute cat coloring pages are drawn with adult colorists in mind – a calm way to unwind after a long day, a sweet handmade gift for the cat lover in your life, or an easy activity to share with the kids on a rainy afternoon.
