A horse is the subject that teaches people to shade. The long curve of the neck, the way light sits on a glossy coat, a mane that seems to move even when the horse stands still – colorists come back to horses year after year for exactly these reasons, and these horse coloring pages are drawn for them. Every horse here is an original Papaya Ink drawing: ponies and tall riding horses, mares with their foals, horses working under saddle and horses with nothing to do but graze. The scenes travel across the seasons and across the map, from stable yards and show rings to beaches, mountain lakes and desert trails, with the riders, barns, fences and flowers that turn a horse picture into a place.
The collection comes in two formats, and the Show me buttons above the grid switch between them. Black & White sheets are classic full-page line art – print and color however you like. With Color Sample sheets are copy coloring pages: the top half is a finished color version, the bottom half is the same scene as clean line art, with a dotted cut line between them. Color the bottom to match the top, or treat the sample as a suggestion and give the horse a coat of your own. Click the picture – PDF opens, US Letter, fits A4. One note for home printing: on a black-and-white printer the color sample comes out in gray, so the two-format sheets look best from a color printer.
A few things that help with horses in particular. Decide the coat first – bay, chestnut, gray, palomino, pinto – and let the mane and tail follow, since they usually match the body or deliberately contrast with it. Shade along the muscle, not across it: a stroke that runs down the neck into the shoulder reads as a horse, a stroke straight across reads as a stripe. White markings – a blaze, socks, patches – are the easiest thing to ruin, so outline them lightly and color around them. And on the detailed pages, finish the horse before the background; a finished horse makes it obvious how much of the scenery still needs color.

Fun Things to Make with These Coloring Pages
- Coat swatch card: before coloring the herd pages, test bay, chestnut, palomino and gray on a scrap and pick a different coat for every horse in the running herd.
- Show ribbon: color the horse show winner, cut out the rosette, glue it to a circle of card and add real ribbon tails for a pretend award.
- Barn door frame: fold a sheet of brown cardstock into two doors that open, and mount the stable scene with the appaloosa behind them.
- Rainbow wash: paint the sky on the puddle or herd pages with a light watercolor rainbow first, let it dry, then color the horses on top.
- Beach diorama: color the lighthouse gallop, cut out the three horses and stand them in a shoebox filled with sand and shells.
- Mane makeover: on the braided-mane pages, give each braid and ribbon its own color and add a few tiny paper flowers with glue dots.
- Seasonal set: color the snow pony, the spring blossoms and the fall fair pages and hang them as a four-season strip, leaving room for a summer beach page.
- Vet clinic play: color the veterinarian page, cut a paper stethoscope and clipboard, and write a checkup report for the pony on the back.
