A penguin is the rare animal that arrives already colored in: black back, white front, and a small patch of yellow or orange near the beak that does all the work. For anyone with a box of pencils, that is good news in more ways than one. The bird itself takes a few minutes, and the rest of the page – ice, water, sky, whatever the penguins have built this time – is yours to decide. These penguin coloring pages come in several moods: cute cartoon penguins busy with everyday winter life, realistic emperor and Adelie penguins with their chicks and colonies, and storybook fantasy scenes where penguins turn up in places no penguin has any business being.
The pages also come in different formats, and the Show me buttons above the pictures switch between them. Black & White sheets are full-page line art, from open, easy shapes to dense scenes for fine liners and slow evenings. With Color Sample sheets are copy coloring pages: a finished color version on the top half, the same picture in clean outlines below, and a dotted line between them. One honest note: on a black-and-white printer the sample prints in gray, so pick the Black & White sheets if that is the printer you have. Every picture is a free printable. A few things help with penguins. Black areas look flat when they are filled with a black pencil alone; lay down dark blue or violet first, add black on top, and leave a thin pale line along the edge of the wing. White bellies are not really white either – a touch of light gray or blue on the shadow side makes them round. Ice takes almost any cool color, and a little pink or yellow near the horizon turns a plain page into a sunset. Save the warm colors for scarves, lanterns and beaks, and they will stand out against all that blue. Pages marked Detailed suit sharp pencils and adults with time to spare; the open ones are quick wins for kids, or for a tired evening.

Fun Things to Make with These Coloring Pages
- Color the black-and-white half in the classic palette, then color a second print in a totally invented scheme and hang the two side by side.
- Cut along the dotted line, mount the colored half on a card and turn it into a winter greeting card.
- Color only the ice and water in different shades of blue, leaving the penguins mostly white, for a calm two-tone art print.
- Fold the colored half into a bookmark for a bedtime book about penguins.
- Glue the finished outline onto cardstock, cut around it and stick a magnet on the back for the fridge.
- Trace the largest penguin from a sheet onto felt and sew a simple stuffed toy.
- Use the cut-out penguins as name tags or place cards for a winter birthday table.
- Have each family member color the same sheet with their own palette, then compare the results over hot cocoa.
