An elephant's trunk has no bones at all – it is pure muscle, strong enough to pull down a branch and precise enough to pick up a single berry. That is a large part of the charm of elephant coloring pages: the trunk is always busy with something, and the rest of the animal is a pleasure to shade – fan-shaped ears, creased knees, round toenails and a small tufted tail. This collection runs from realistic elephants on the savanna to mothers with calves and cute baby elephant coloring pages set in gardens, by the water and at home. All of them are original Papaya Ink drawings.
The pages come in two formats. Black and white sheets are classic line art from edge to edge. Pages with a color sample carry a finished color version on the top half and the same drawing in outline below, with a dashed line between them: match the palette, or cut the sample off and go your own way. The Show me buttons above the pictures switch between the two formats. Click the picture – the PDF opens, sized for US Letter, and it fits A4 as well. On a black and white printer the color sample comes out in grays, so those pages are best printed in color.
Elephant gray is rarely plain gray. Build it in layers – a cool blue-gray or soft lilac base, a warmer taupe in the folds, peach or pink inside the ears – and let your strokes follow the wrinkle lines so the skin looks thick. Keep the toenails and the highlight in each eye light. Pages with big open shapes suit markers and crayons; the busier scenes are marked Detailed in the caption and do better with sharp colored pencils or fine liners. Adults get a slow, absorbing hour out of those, and kids tend to head straight for the easy ones.

Fun Things to Make with These Coloring Pages
- Shade the elephant skin in soft gray, taupe and dusty blue instead of flat gray, following the direction of the wrinkle lines for a leathery look.
- Color one page in warm sunset tones (peach, gold, coral) and the same page again in cool dusk tones (lavender, teal, navy) and hang them side by side.
- Cut out a finished elephant, glue it onto cardstock and fold it into a standing greeting card.
- Turn a garden or jungle scene into a bookmark by trimming a tall strip and laminating it with clear tape.
- Use the family scenes for a nursery wall: color each sheet in the same palette, trim to size and frame in a simple grid.
- Let kids add their own patterns to the ears and blanket-style folds – stripes, dots and tiny flowers make each elephant unique.
- Print a sheet on light gray paper and color only the highlights and background, leaving the elephant in paper tone.
- Bring a few sheets to a rainy-day play date with a shared tin of colored pencils and let everyone pick their favorite elephant.
