Chickens are the most numerous bird on earth and probably the least looked at. Stand next to a hen for a minute and the plain brown bird turns out to be built from hundreds of overlapping feathers, each with its own edge to color, and a rooster adds a comb, wattles, a cape of hackle feathers and a tail that can run longer than his body. That structure is what makes chicken coloring pages work so well for adults: there is real texture to render, and the birds hold still on paper far better than they do in the yard. These chicken coloring pages cover hens, roosters and chicks in realistic, folk-art, mandala, stained-glass and storybook styles, with simple thick-lined sheets for kids and beginners mixed in. Every bird is an original Papaya Ink drawing.
Click any picture and the PDF opens in a new tab, ready to print on US Letter; it fits A4 with the same margins. The Download button saves the file, Print sends it straight to your printer, and the book button at the top collects the whole collection into one PDF so you can print it in a single run.
A few things that help with poultry. Feathers overlap downward like roof tiles, so shade each row a little darker at its base and lighter at the tip and the bird gains volume without any blending. Combs and wattles are the one place real red belongs; keep the rest of the palette earthy – buff, rust, slate, barred gray – or go deliberately wrong and give a hen the colors of a parrot, which coloring pages allow and farms do not. For the patterned and stained-glass sheets, pick a short palette and repeat it rather than reaching for every pencil in the box.

Fun Things to Make with These Coloring Pages
- Egg-carton frame – cut a colored chicken down to size, glue it inside the lid of a flattened egg carton, and hang it in the kitchen. The pressed-paper texture already looks like a nest.
- Feather study – color one bird with pencils only, laying three close shades on every feather row from base to tip. Slow, but the finished hen looks almost photographic.
- Kitchen tea towel – trace the outline onto plain cotton with a fabric marker, color with fabric paints and heat-set with an iron. Roosters on linen have been in farmhouse kitchens for a century.
- Wall calendar – color a sheet each month, then back it on card with a small calendar grid printed below. Barn-style decor for the mudroom or the coop door.
- Farm counting game for kids – after coloring, count the hens, chicks, eggs and flowers out loud and write the totals in the margin. Coloring and arithmetic in one sitting.
- Garden markers – color a hen or rooster, laminate it, staple it to a wooden stake and plant it by the vegetable bed. Cheap, cheerful and good at scaring off nothing at all.
- Metallic highlights – once the coloring is done, run a gold gel pen along the comb, the wattles and the edge of each tail feather. On the folk-art and mandala sheets it reads like gilded pottery.
- Greeting cards – fold a sheet of card, trim a colored chicken to fit the front, and write inside. Chickens suit birthdays, Easter and thank-you notes for anyone who sold you eggs.
